It's interesting to me that more and more I find myself referencing other people’s pictures, not consciously you understand, but only when I get back to my computer and see what I've shot during the day. In 1967 the National Film Board of Canada Stills Division (now no longer) published a book "Canada, A year of the land", it was produced by Lorraine Monk, and the who's who of Canadian photography worked on the project to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Canadian Federation. I was a student in England at the time but the book had a profound effect on me. More than I thought obviously because almost 40 years later I find me referencing John de Visser's picture which was reproduced both inside and on the slipcover. John's is a much better picture of course but still I find this interesting. What I also find interesting, being a google junky, is how little reference I found to the book on the web. It appears our collective memory is short. In 1968 "This Rock Within the Sea" was published by McClelland Stewart. written by Farley Mowatt and photographed by John de Visser. I am fortunate to have a copy of this amazing book which documents the life in the outports of Newfoundland while there was still cod on the Grand Banks and the only access to the communities was by boat.

During my walks through the woods these mornings there are so many spider's webs in some areas that it's difficult to avoid inadvertently destroying some of them. The next morning there they are back again in the same spot. I don't know if it's the same spider doing the work but I'm amazed at the speed they apparently work and the intricacy and precision of some of their work. Eat your heart out Andy Goldsworthy.
